Christians are in training for eternal reluership with Christ. The character needed to fulfill both present and future responsibilities can, at times, be developed only in the school of suffering. The author points out that it is not the mere presence of suffering but how a Christian reacts to it which determines one’s spiritual growth through sorrow and pain.
